Breakout — Orbital: A 3D Brick Breaker for Your Browser

Breakout — Orbital is a free browser game built solo with AI assistance from ChatGPT. It keeps the familiar paddle-and-ball rules inside a three-dimensional arena, with eight sectors, five power-ups and local high scores. It is part of the free game collection at filipdelac.com/sologamedevs.

Eight sectors with different layouts

The first sector, Solar Array, starts with 50 bricks. Gemini Station introduces armoured bricks that need multiple hits. A moving gate appears in The Crossing, the third sector. Chain Reaction adds volatile bricks that damage nearby blocks, while later sectors combine tighter layouts, heavier armour and higher ball speeds. Event Horizon is the eighth and final sector.

You begin with three lives. Clearing a sector awards bonus points; advancing to the next adds a life, up to five. Consecutive brick breaks build a score multiplier up to five times the normal value. A paddle bounce resets that combo, so aiming into a group of bricks matters.

Controls and power-ups

Move the paddle with your mouse, drag on the arena with a finger, or use the arrow keys or A/D. Press Space or click the arena to launch; on touch, tap to launch. P or Esc pauses, R restarts and M toggles sound. The fullscreen button gives the arena more room on your screen.

Falling pickups add multiball, a wider paddle, automatic lasers, a one-use safety net or slow motion. The wide paddle lasts 18 seconds; lasers and slow motion last 12. Relaxed, Classic and Expert settings change the pace without changing the basic controls.

How the 3D game is built

The project uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Three.js 0.180.0. GLTFLoader loads Kenney Space Kit GLB models for the speeder, satellite dish, meteor, crystals and collectible barrels. RoundedBoxGeometry gives the procedural bricks, paddle and arena their softened edges. Hemisphere and directional lights, soft shadows and ACES tone mapping handle the scene's lighting.

A practical development challenge was keeping fast balls from passing through thin obstacles between frames. The game splits physics updates into small steps, checks collisions against the ball's previous position and changes the return angle according to where the ball meets the paddle.

A standalone download

The download packs the game into one HTML file, including Three.js, fonts and models. Embedded GLB data is decoded and passed to GLTFLoader.parseAsync, so the standalone build needs no model requests or CDN scripts. Sound effects are synthesized with the Web Audio API. Best scores, recent runs and settings use localStorage keys prefixed with breakout-orbital, keeping this game's records separate from the rest of the collection.
