Flappy Horizons: a Flappy Bird remake made with ChatGPT

Flappy Horizons keeps the short decision at the centre of Flappy Bird: flap now, or let the bird fall a little further. I built this browser game solo with AI assistance from ChatGPT, using HTML, CSS and Three.js. The yellow bird flies through green pipe gaps above a low-poly woodland, while coins give each run a second target beyond the gate count.

Two ways to fly

Adventure begins with three hearts. Some later gates move vertically, and shields can absorb a collision. A full Focus meter gives three seconds of slower play before it needs to recharge. Every ten cleared gates, the scenery advances to the next of three landscapes. Those landscapes cycle; there is no final third stage. The scrolling pace also increases as the score rises.

Classic reduces that setup to one heart and stationary gates. You still need to judge the bird's rise and fall, but the extra Adventure abilities are absent. Coins collected during flights can be spent on the aviary's other birds. Sunny, Sage, Rosie and Blue change the appearance of the character, while the flight physics stay the same.

Simple input, separate timing rules

Press Space, Up or Enter to flap, or click or tap inside the arena. In Adventure, E and the on-screen Focus button activate slow time. P or Esc pauses the run. The control scheme works without a keyboard through the arena and interface buttons. Best scores for both modes, coins, flight count, bird choices and preferences are stored locally in the browser.

The technical problem is keeping flight, gate motion and slow time coordinated. The FlightEngine caps its update interval and derives simulation time from the Focus state, while the Focus timer uses real elapsed time. Gates are generated from a seeded random function and recycled after leaving the scene. That separates the endless course from the visual woodland.

A 3D landscape around a small game

Three.js 0.180.0 renders the scene through an orthographic camera. GLTFLoader brings in Kenney Nature Kit trees, rocks and plants; the bird and pipes are constructed from geometry. Soft shadows and adjustable rendering quality shape the view without changing the rules. Flappy Horizons is part of the free Solo Game Devs browser-game collection, with a standalone HTML download planned for the same game.
